About the Icom M605E Fixed VHF Radio with AIS Receiver

The Icom IC-M605EURO is a multi-station fixed marine VHF radio with a built-in AIS receiver — the set for a boat where the radio needs to work from more than one place. Up to three remote stations (RC-M600 Command Heads or HM-229 CommandMics) connect to the main unit, each with full control and an intercom between all positions: helm, flybridge and nav station on one radio.

The 4.3-inch colour display shows AIS vessel traffic alongside radio operation, with DSC calls made directly to a selected target. The receiver is commercial grade — better than 75dB selectivity, holding a weak signal next to a strong one in a busy marina — and active noise cancelling cleans both directions of the call. A last-call recorder automatically keeps up to two minutes of the most recent incoming message, so a garbled or missed call can be replayed rather than requested again. GNSS is integrated, with the UX-241 antenna and 5m cable supplied; a 30W two-way hailer and four-pattern automatic foghorn work through an optional horn speaker; NMEA 2000 and 0183/-HS connect the lot to the boat's instruments.

How many stations can the IC-M605E run, and what does each need?

Up to three remote stations alongside the main set, each either an RC-M600 Command Head (a full second control unit with display) or an HM-229 CommandMic. Every position gets full radio control, with an intercom between all of them — helm, flybridge and nav station on one system.

Can every station make DSC calls?

Yes — remote stations have full control of the radio, DSC included. The distress function remains available from the main unit's guarded button.

What does the last-call recording capture?

The radio automatically keeps up to two minutes of the most recent incoming call, so a message that arrived garbled — or while you were dealing with something else — can be replayed rather than asking the other station to repeat it. On a working boat that's a genuinely regular save.

Does the AIS display replace a chartplotter?

No — it's situational awareness, not navigation. The 4.3" screen shows AIS targets and lets you DSC-call one directly, which is excellent for collision avoidance and calling ships by name, but passage planning and charting still belong on a plotter. Over NMEA 2000 the radio feeds its AIS and position data to one anyway.
