The Icom IC-M510E EVO AIS is a fixed marine VHF radio with a built-in AIS receiver — vessel traffic appears on the radio's own colour screen, and you can DSC-call a target straight from the AIS display without knowing its MMSI or even reading its name off the hull. One box at the helm covers radio, DSC safety and traffic awareness.
Everything else matches the standard M510E EVO: smartphone control and intercom for up to three devices via the RS-M500 app, built-in NMEA 2000 sending AIS and position data to a chartplotter, the 25W two-way hailer with foghorn through an optional SP-37 speaker, active noise cancelling, and the near-180° colour display with night mode. The supplied HM-205RB mic connects front or rear.

Does the AIS receiver transmit my position too?
No — it's a receiver only. You see other AIS-equipped vessels; they don't see you. To transmit your own position you need an AIS transponder such as the Class B MA-510TR, which this radio pairs with.
Can I see AIS targets on my chartplotter as well as the radio?
Yes — the radio shares AIS data over its built-in NMEA 2000 connection, so targets can be displayed on a connected MFD or chartplotter as well as on the radio's own screen.
Is the AIS receiver worth it over the standard M510E EVO?
It depends what's at your helm already. If a chartplotter with AIS is fitted, the standard version does everything you need. If the radio is the main display, or you want traffic awareness independent of the plotter, the built-in receiver — and the ability to DSC-call a target straight off the AIS screen — is a function we are big fans of.
Do I need a separate AIS antenna?
No — the AIS receiver works from the radio's VHF antenna. As with all VHF, the higher that antenna is mounted, the further you'll see: AIS reception range is governed by antenna height, just like voice range.
