The Icom IC-M37E is a buoyant handheld marine VHF radio with 6W of transmit power — the higher output giving usefully more range than the 5W class when you're working at deck level. It floats if dropped overboard, with a flashing red LED and backlit screen to help you find it, and AquaQuake clears water from the speaker before you transmit again.
The 700mW audio is loud enough for a windy deck, and the large keys and grippy body work with cold, wet hands. A channel history function recalls the last five channels used at a single key press — genuinely handy when you're switching between a working channel, the marina and 16. Battery life is over 12 hours from the supplied li-ion pack, and the drop-in charger runs from the supplied mains PSU or 12V on board via USB. A BP-297 AAA battery case comes in the box as a grab-bag backup.

Does the IC-M37E float with AAA batteries fitted?
Usually, but check yours. Icom's guidance is that it floats with most common AAA brands, but battery weight varies by manufacturer — so test buoyancy in shallow water before relying on it. With the standard li-ion pack fitted, it floats reliably.
What's the difference between the IC-M37E and the IC-M25 EVO?
Power and charging, mainly. The M37E transmits at 6W to the M25's 5W, giving a little more range at deck level, and comes with a drop-in charger and a AAA battery case for backup. The M25 EVO is lighter, charges by USB-C, and costs less. For a grab bag or tender either works; for more regular use use or on commercial vessels the upgrade makes sense.
How long does the battery last on a day's sailing?
Icom state up to 12 hours in typical use (we have always found Icom's stats to be consertavtive), which covers a full day comfortably — a radio spends most of its time receiving, which draws far less than transmitting. The AAA case in the box is the belt-and-braces backup.
Can it be charged on board from 12V?
Yes — the drop-in charger runs from the supplied mains PSU or from 12V via a USB adapter socket, so it can live in its cradle at the chart table.
