The Icom IC-M510E EVO is a fixed marine VHF radio you can also run from your phone: the RS-M500 app turns up to three smart devices into wireless mics and remote controls over the boat's WLAN, with an intercom between handset and radio — so you can take and make calls from the deck, the flybridge or a cabin without wiring in a second station.
NMEA 2000 is built in, sharing position, DSC and channel data with a chartplotter over a single plug-and-play backbone. The colour display reads from almost any angle and has a night mode; a 25W two-way hailer talks to deck or shore through an optional SP-37 horn speaker, which also sounds foghorn patterns and relays radio traffic on deck. Active noise cancelling keeps calls clear over engine noise, the supplied HM-205RB mic connects at front or rear panel to suit the installation, and DSC distress is a single guarded button.
Waterproofing is IP68 — a step beyond the usual IPX7, rated to 1 metre for a full 60 minutes.

How does the smartphone control work — does it need internet?
No internet involved — the radio and your phone connect over a local wireless link using the free RS-M500 app (iOS and Android), so it works at sea exactly as it does in the marina. The phone becomes a wireless mic and remote control, with an intercom between phone and radio.
How many phones can connect at once?
Up to three smart devices simultaneously — enough for helm, deck and cabin to each carry one without wiring in extra stations.
What's the difference between this and the AIS version?
One thing: the AIS version has a built-in AIS receiver, showing vessel traffic on the radio's screen and letting you DSC-call a target directly. Everything else — smartphone control, NMEA 2000, hailer, display — is identical. If your chartplotter already receives AIS, the standard version may be all you need; if the radio is your main screen at the helm, the AIS version earns its premium.
Will it connect to my chartplotter?
